Lucius Mindius Pollio served as proconsul of Bithynia-Pontus under Claudius, and his name appearing in the magistrate formula on local bronze coinage was standard practice for the province — Rome permitted cities like Nicomedia to continue striking civic bronzes provided they acknowledged both the emperor and the Roman official overseeing the region. Bithynia had been a senatorial province since 27 BC, bequeathed to Rome by its last king, Nicomedes IV, and the proconsular naming convention on these issues reflects that administrative inheritance directly.
