Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony — Colonia Alexandria Augusta Troadensis — founded by Antigonus and refounded under Lysimachus before Augustus formalized its colonial status. That colonial rank gave it the right to strike autonomous bronze coinage with Latin legends, unusual for the Greek-speaking eastern provinces. Under Caracalla, the city received renewed imperial favor, possibly tied to his reorganization of provincial administrative structures around 214 AD during his eastern campaign preparations.

The mint was notably prolific under Caracalla relative to neighboring civic issues, suggesting an active local magistracy pushing production.
