Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony — Colonia Augusta Troas — refounded under Augustus on the site of Antigoneia, itself built by Antigonus I over the ruins of several older Troad settlements. The city retained colonial status and the right to issue bronze coinage through the third century, a privilege that accounts for the Latin legends unusual on provincial bronze in a predominantly Greek-speaking region.
