Alexandria Troas held the status of a Roman colonia — a distinction granted by Augustus and later reinforced under successive emperors — which gave it the right to issue autonomous bronze coinage styled after Roman practice rather than the Greek civic tradition. That colonial status is precisely why the mint's output looks so different from other Asian Greek bronzes of the same period. Caracalla's reign saw unusually heavy use of this mint, possibly connected to his movements through Asia Minor during his eastern campaigns after 214 AD.
