Year four of Antoninus Pius's reign — the regnal year recorded by the L Δ date formula — fell early in a principate so stable that ancient sources struggled to find drama in it. Egypt under Antoninus remained a closed monetary system: no foreign coinage was accepted, and Alexandrian bronze circulated exclusively within the province, never beyond its borders. The Alexandrian mint was effectively a state instrument of fiscal control, not simply a production facility.
