This piece dates to Year 2 of Antoninus Pius — the first full regnal year following his accession in July 138 AD, itself immediately preceded by the death of Hadrian. Alexandria's mint moved quickly to produce civic bronze in the new emperor's name, and the Year 2 issues are among the earliest Alexandrian coinage attributable to his reign. Hadrian had lavished particular attention on Egypt, visiting in 130 AD; Antoninus never set foot in the province, governing it entirely through prefects.
