The design commemorates three distinct athletic and religious festivals celebrated at Nicaea: the Dionysia, the Pythia, and the joint Valeriana-Galliena games instituted under the co-emperors. A Greek inscription is distributed across the field, identifying the issuing city and the festivals. The composition is typical of agonistic civic coinage struck by prosperous Bithynian cities during the mid-third century AD. |
