Obverse description Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valerian I facing left, depicted in three-quarter view from the front, with the radiate crown rendered in pronounced relief. The paludamentum is visible over the cuirass, and the bust is rendered in the typical provincial military portrait style of the mid-third century. A Greek imperial legend encircles the effigy along the border, partially interrupted by wear. A test punch hole is noted in the field.

Reverse description Two conical fish traps (wicker basket traps) are depicted upright and flanking a small altar at center, the altar shown in elevation between the traps. The fish traps, a distinctive civic emblem of Byzantium referencing the city's renowned fisheries on the Bosphorus, are rendered with careful detail showing their woven, tapering form and open bases. The reverse legend, divided between the exergual and peripheral fields, references the Homonoia (civic concord) between Byzantium and Nicaea. A test punch hole is visible in the lower central field.
