The obverse legend encircles the effigy in Greek characters, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. In her right hand she holds a long torch, and in her left she cradles ears of corn, emblematic of her role as goddess of the harvest and fertility. The reverse legend in Greek encircles the field, referencing Nicomedia's twice-neocorate status, a prestigious honorific title granted by Rome to cities housing imperial cult temples. The composition is typical of civic bronze coinage from Bithynia under the Severan dynasty. |
