The architectural rendering is characteristic of the colonial coinage of Alexandria Troas, which frequently celebrated the local cult of Apollo Smintheus. The colonial legend is distributed around the reverse field. |

Alexandria Troas held the status of a Roman colony — Colonia Alexandria Augusta Troas — a distinction granted by Augustus and jealously maintained in civic coinage through the Severan period. Under Alexander Severus, the city's bronze issues reflect a municipal authority operating with considerable autonomy in its local monetary decisions, a privilege tied directly to its colonial standing rather than to any provincial administrative framework.
