In the exergue, a river god swims to the left, representing the Daisan (Skirtos) river that flowed through Edessa. The encircling colonial legend ΜΗΤ ΚΟΛ ΕΔΕϹϹΗΝωΝ identifies this as the Metropolis Colonia of the Edessenes, reflecting the city's elevated Roman colonial status under Severus Alexander. |
