In her right hand she holds a ship's rudder resting on the ground, symbolising maritime prosperity, while her left arm bears a cornucopia overflowing with fruits and foliage. The figure is rendered in the conventional provincial civic style, occupying the full height of the flan. The encircling Greek ethnic legend identifies the issuing community of Tripolis. |

Tripolis on the Maeander — not to be confused with the better-known Libyan city — was a small Lydian town whose civic coinage under Septimius Severus reflects the broader surge in provincial bronze production that accompanied his reign. After seizing power in 193 following the murder of Pertinax, Severus needed eastern goodwill; cities across the Sardis conventus responded with flattering civic issues. Tripolis produced relatively few distinct types, making any example from this city genuinely scarce in modern collections.
