Aphrodisias held an unusual status in the Roman provincial system — the city had obtained a formal declaration of freedom (eleutheria) and tax immunity (ateleia) from Augustus himself, privileges repeatedly reaffirmed by subsequent emperors. The magistrate name in this issue, Ti. Cl. Zenon Timeles, places it within a local civic aristocracy that leveraged such imperial favor into lasting epigraphic and numismatic visibility. Zenon's family name suggests Roman citizenship acquired under the Julio-Claudians, a common pattern among Aphrodisian elites who cultivated connections to Rome across generations.
