Reverse description The mythological seafaring hero Astakos, eponymous founder of Astacus and patron figure of Nicomedia, depicted standing to the right with his left foot raised and resting on a ship's prow, his head turned back to the left. He extends his left arm rearward while holding a transverse spear in his right hand. The composition alludes to the city's maritime heritage and colonial pride. The Greek legend in the field references the city's twice-awarded neocorate status.
