Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony — Colonia Augusta Troadensis — founded under Augustus on the site of Antigonus's earlier city of Antigonia. Its colonial status gave it the right to issue bronze coinage in the Roman fashion, which it exercised heavily under Septimius Severus, partly because the city functioned as a key Aegean transit point for troops moving between Europe and Asia. Severus's civil wars against Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus between 193 and 197 AD put enormous logistical pressure on exactly these routes.
