Reverse description Depiction of the mythological scene of Hero and Leander: Leander swims rightward through stylized waves toward the tower of Sestus (the lighthouse), atop which Hero stands, holding aloft a lamp to guide her lover. The composition references the famous legend associated with Abydus and Sestus on the Hellespont, a subject of local civic pride for the Abydene mint. The ethnic legend of the issuing city is inscribed around the design.
