| Obverse description | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Septimius Severus facing right, presented in three-quarter rear view, as was customary for certain provincial issues of the period. The portrait conveys the emperor's military authority through the combination of the imperial laurel wreath and cuirass. A partial Greek legend runs around the field identifying the imperial titulature. |

| Reverse description | Depiction of the mythological scene of Hero and Leander: Leander swims rightward through stylized waves toward the tower of Sestus (the lighthouse), atop which Hero stands, holding aloft a lamp to guide her lover. The composition references the famous legend associated with Abydus and Sestus on the Hellespont, a subject of local civic pride for the Abydene mint. The ethnic legend of the issuing city is inscribed around the design. |
