Obverse description Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip II facing right, seen from the front, rendered in the provincial workshop style typical of Lydian civic coinage. The emperor's features are depicted with short hair and a youthful countenance consistent with his portraiture as Caesar. The encircling obverse legend names him as Marcus Julius Philippus, identifying the subject as Philip II, son of the reigning emperor Philip I.

Reverse description Heracles stands facing right, his right arm drawn behind his back in a characteristic pose of repose, holding the Nemean lion skin draped over his arm while his club rests against a rock at his side. To the left of the figure, a quiver and bow are depicted in the field, referencing Heracles' role as a divine protector and patron deity closely associated with the city of Sardis. The reverse legend encircling the composition proclaims the double neocorate status of the Sardians, a mark of civic prestige granted for the establishment of imperial cult temples.
