Æ24 - Pescennius Niger ΚΑΙϹΑΡΕΙΑϹ ΓΕΡΜΑΝΙΚΗϹ

Caesarea Germanica — a small Bithynian city on the Paphlagonian border — backed Niger during the civil war of 193–194, one of several provincial mints that struck in his name while Septimius Severus was consolidating power in the west. Niger's claim collapsed at the Battle of Issus in 194, after which Severus systematically punished cities that had supported him. Nicomedia and Antioch both suffered consequences. Whether Caesarea Germanica faced reprisals is poorly documented, which may explain why civic coinage from this city across the Severan period is so sparse.
