| Reverse description | Full-length frontal cult statue of Athena standing erect at centre, depicted in the archaic xoanon tradition associated with the local sanctuary on Melos. The goddess appears helmeted and robed, rendered in a stiff, hieratic pose consistent with cult image representations on provincial coinage. The ethnic legend ΜΗΛΙΩΝ, genitive plural identifying the issuing community of the Melians, is inscribed in the field to the left and right of the figure. The overall composition reflects the civic pride of the island community in their tutelary deity. |
