The circular Greek legend ΣEBAΣTOΣ MAKEΔONΩN runs around the periphery, identifying the issuing body as the Koinon of Macedonia and honoring the emperor as Augustus. The shield device is a traditional emblem of Macedonian identity, evoking the heritage of Alexander the Great and his successors, and is a recurring type on Koinon coinage of the Julio-Claudian period. |
