Obverse description Confronted busts of the Emperor Nero, laureate, to the right, and his third wife Statilia Messalina, draped, to the left, facing one another across the field in the characteristic vis-à-vis composition favoured by Lydian civic issues. The portrait of Nero displays the characteristic broad facial features and layered hair of his later coinage, while Messalina's effigy shows a diademed and draped bust rendered in the provincial style. A Greek legend arcs across the upper field, and the entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
