Nicaea's civic bronzes under Maximinus Thrax carry an implicit tension: the city continued issuing coins in the name of an emperor who never visited the eastern provinces and whose reign ended with his own troops starving him out during the siege of Aquileia in 238. Provincial mints in Bithynia had no reliable intelligence about events in Italy, and some issues may have been struck after his death was already fact in Rome.
