Cyzicus was one of the most important cities in the conventus of Asia, and its mint was active and prolific under the Antonines. The years 169–175 coincide almost exactly with the Marcomannic Wars on the Danube frontier, a period during which Marcus was absent from Rome for extended stretches — making civic coinages like this one part of a broader provincial effort to maintain his image and authority across the eastern cities without direct imperial mint involvement.
