Argos maintained the right to strike civic bronze through much of the imperial period, a privilege extended to relatively few Peloponnesian cities. Under Hadrian, that privilege carried particular weight — he visited the Peloponnese, was initiated into the Eleusinian Mysteries, and cultivated Greek civic identity with unusual personal investment.
