| Beschrijving voorzijde | Laureate head of Asclepius facing right, rendered in low relief with curling hair and beard in the classical Greek tradition. The legend ΙΕΡΑϹ [ΕΠΙΔΑΥ]ΡΟΥ, meaning 'of holy Epidaurus', is disposed around the periphery of the flan. The portrait exhibits the characteristic iconography of the god of medicine as adopted by the civic coinage of Epidaurus, the principal cult site of Asclepius in the ancient world. The flan is somewhat irregular and the surfaces show wear consistent with prolonged circulation. |
