Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony — Colonia Alexandrea Augusta — whose coinage reflects its privileged colonial status rather than the broader provincial mint network of the Greek East. Elagabalus, emperor from 218 to 222 following his installation by Syrian legions who believed him to be the illegitimate son of Caracalla, was actively promoted by his grandmother Julia Maesa, whose political maneuvering kept the dynasty alive long enough to install Severus Alexander after Elagabalus was murdered by the Praetorian Guard at eighteen.
The Conventus of Adramyteum grouping places this issue within the administrative geography of the Asian assizes, a detail relevant to attribution but rarely reflected in the coins themselves.
