Patras held the status of a Roman colony — Colonia Aroe Augusta Patrensis — since its refoundation under Augustus, which gave the city the right to strike its own bronze coinage with Latin legends, unusual for a Greek provincial mint. This piece dates to the period when Domitian was consolidating his authority following the revolt of Saturninus, and the colony's loyalty was commercially and politically useful to Rome's grip on the Peloponnese.
The reference II#232 places this within the colonial series, a relatively short sequence that ends before Domitian's damnatio memoriae in 96 AD left civic authorities across the empire quietly retiring his issues.
