Beschrijving keerzijde Elpis, the personification of Hope, standing left in full figure, clad in a long chiton, raising a flower in her right hand and lifting the hem of her garment with her left. The regnal date L ΚΗ (Year 28) is divided in the field to either side of the figure, a characteristic feature of Alexandrian coinage used to indicate the Egyptian regnal year. The design is typical of the Alexandrian mint's iconographic repertoire for Hope under Commodus.

Aanvullende informatie

Year 28 of Commodus's reign as reckoned by the Alexandrian calendar — the Egyptian dating system that gave provincial bronzes their regnal year markers — falls in 187–188 AD, a period when the emperor had begun his accelerating descent into megalomania. Within two years he would rename Rome "Colonia Commodiana" and declare himself the reincarnation of Hercules. The Alexandria mint, one of the most prolific provincial operations in the empire, continued producing its dated civic coinage largely indifferent to the chaos in the capital.
