He holds a long reed in one hand and a cornucopia in the other, and leans against an overturned water-urn from which water flows, symbolising the all-encircling ocean. The figure is rendered in a recumbent pose consistent with Hellenistic river-god and sea-deity iconography. The Greek legend ΩΚΕΑΝΟϹ ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ appears around the periphery, identifying both the reverse type and the issuing civic authority of Ephesus. |
