Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony — Colonia Alexandria Augusta — refounded under Augustus from the earlier Antigoneia, itself established by Antigonus I Monophthalmus after Alexander's death. Its colonial status entitled it to issue bronze coinage in its own name, a privilege that distinguished it from the surrounding non-colonial Greek cities of the Troad. Under Caracalla, the city's mint was notably active, likely reflecting imperial favor tied to his well-documented obsession with Alexander the Great, whose memory he cultivated with near-pathological intensity throughout his reign.
