Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony founded by Antigonus and later refounded by Lysimachus before Augustus reorganized it as a full Roman colony — a status the city advertised aggressively on its coinage with the COL abbreviation. Under Caracalla, the colony gained particular imperial attention; he visited the Troad region and reportedly held a strong personal attachment to the cult of Achilles at nearby Sigeum, staging elaborate ceremonies at the hero's tomb in imitation of Alexander the Great.

The conventus of Adramyteum was one of the judicial districts into which the province of Asia was divided, with Alexandria Troas serving as a dominant civic center within it.
