Carthage had been razed by Rome in 146 BC and its site left deliberately desolate for over a century before Julius Caesar ordered its refoundation as a Roman colony in 44 BC — a project completed under Augustus. The duoviri named on this issue held the senior magistracy of the colonial administration, their names on the coinage functioning as both civic record and personal advertisement. Colonial bronzes from Carthage in this period are underrepresented in major collections relative to their historical weight.
