Æ24 - Augustus M BARBATIO, MN ACILIO IIVIR (in two lines at the exergue)

Parium, a Roman colony on the southern Propontis coast, was one of the few cities in the Adramyteum conventus with a strong tradition of autonomous bronze coinage, and its magistrate-named issues under Augustus reflect the local elite's eagerness to align themselves publicly with the new imperial order. The duoviri named here — Barbatio and Acilius — would have held the highest civic office in the colony, and the decision to place their names so prominently on an imperial-era issue was as much about local political currency as it was about Rome.
