Nicaea Cilbianorum was a small inland community in the Cayster River valley of Lydia, administratively grouped under the Conventus of Ephesus for Roman judicial and civic purposes. The ethnikon ΚΙΛΒΙΑΝΩΝ ΠΕΡΙ ΝΕΙΚΕΑΝ — "Nicaea among the Cilbiani" — was necessary to distinguish this settlement from the far more prominent Nicaea in Bithynia, a distinction the city's mint took seriously enough to stamp on virtually every issue it produced.
Bronze civic coinage from this region proliferated under Antoninus Pius as local elites competed for prestige through coin-funded euergetism. Few pieces from this mint survive outside major European institutional collections.
