Reverse description The river god Hermus is depicted reclining to the left in the classical personification tradition, his semi-draped figure leaning upon an overturned urn from which water flows. In his extended hand he holds two corn-ears, while a cornucopia rests in the crook of his arm, symbolising the agricultural abundance of the Hermus valley. The figure is rendered in a naturalistic Hellenistic style characteristic of civic bronze coinage from Smyrna. The reverse legend surrounding the type names the magistrate and the issuing city, with the deity's name completing the identification.
