In his right hand he holds a rod or sceptre whose tip touches the prow of a ship, symbolising maritime commerce, while his left hand grasps a reed. He reclines upon an overturned urn from which water flows freely, a standard iconographic motif for river deities on provincial bronzes of Bithynia. The ethnic legend ΤΙΑΝΩΝ, meaning 'of the Tians', appears in the field, identifying the issuing city of Tium. |

Tium was a minor coastal city on the Black Sea shore of Bithynia, and its civic bronze output under the joint reign of Valerian I and Gallienus reflects the period's administrative complexity — both emperors were honored simultaneously on provincial issues, a direct consequence of Valerian's decision in 253 AD to elevate his son as co-emperor and divide imperial responsibilities. The city's mint was modest in output, and pieces attributable to Tium from this reign are encountered infrequently in trade.
