The Koinon of Bithynia was a league of Greek cities in northwestern Asia Minor that held the right to issue provincial bronze in honor of the ruling emperor — a privilege that served the dual purpose of civic pride and demonstrating loyalty to Rome. Trajan's reign saw particularly active provincial minting across the Greek east, partly driven by his enormous military expenditures for the Dacian and Parthian campaigns, which strained the central supply of small-denomination coinage.
RPC III 1158C is a scarce variety within the type, documented from a limited number of specimens in the online corpus.
