Methymna occupied the northern coast of Lesbos and retained enough civic pride under the Severan dynasty to issue bronze coinage in its own name, despite being administratively folded into the conventus of Adramyteum. These provincial issues depended entirely on local initiative and funding — Rome neither mandated nor subsidized them. Severus Alexander's reign saw a modest revival of such civic bronzes across western Asia Minor, partly because his administration was perceived as stable after the chaos of Elagabalus.
VI#4174 is sparsely represented in major collections, and die studies for Methymnean issues remain incomplete.
