The Magnetes of Thessaly struck bronze for Nero throughout his reign, a regional coinage that operated under the loose framework of provincial autonomy Rome permitted to Greek communities with established civic minting traditions. Magnesia ad Maeandrum — not to be confused with Magnesia on the Sipylos — maintained its own bronze issues well into the imperial period, the ethnic ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩΝ functioning as a point of civic identity at a moment when Greek cities were increasingly absorbed into Roman administrative structures.
