| Description du revers | The river-god Morsynos reclines to the left in the conventional posture of ancient personified watercourses, his semi-nude figure supported on a large water-urn from which water flows. He holds a reed in his right hand and a cornucopia in his left, symbols of the river's fertility and abundance. The encircling legend ΑΦΡΟΔΕΙϹΙΕΩΝ ΜΟΡϹΥΝΟϹ identifies both the issuing city of Aphrodisias and the depicted deity. The overall composition reflects the standard iconographic formula for river-god types on provincial bronzes of the Roman Imperial period. |
