The Koinon of Crete — the island's federal league of cities — was granted the right to strike bronze coinage under Roman imperial oversight, issuing pieces that acknowledged both the emperor and local administrative identity simultaneously. Hadrian visited Crete during his extensive tours of the eastern provinces, and imperial interest in the island's affairs was unusually direct during his reign. Whether this issue predates or postdates his visit remains debated among specialists.
