Æ23 - Gordianus III COL FL PAC DEVLT

Deultum — modern Debelt in Bulgaria — was a Roman veteran colony founded under Vespasian, and its colonial coinage under Gordian III belongs to a provincial mint that was already in steep decline by the mid-third century. The city struck relatively few types for Gordian compared to other Thracian colonies, and RPC VII.2 #48449 is among the scarcer documented emissions from this reign.

Gordian's provincial bronzes from Thrace were effectively terminated by the chaos following his death on campaign against Shapur I in 244 AD — whether by battle wound or murder by his own prefect Philip remains disputed in the sources.
