Obverse description Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, depicted from the rear in the characteristic three-quarter back view typical of later provincial Roman coinage. The paludamentum (military cloak) is visible over the cuirass, conveying imperial and military authority. The surrounding field bears the Greek imperial titulature legend. The flan is irregular, consistent with provincial hammered manufacture.

Additional information

Nicaea was among the most prolific civic minters of the Greek East under the Severans and their successors, and the city's output under Gordian III reflects both its administrative importance as a major Bithynian center and the relatively stable provincial conditions of his reign compared to what followed. The city had long competed with Nicomedia for primacy in Bithynia, a rivalry that played out partly through the prestige of civic coinage.

The reference VII.2#1914 places this within the Recueil général des monnaies grecques d'Asie Mineure corpus.
