正面描述 Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, portrayed three-quarter from the rear, a presentation convention typical of provincial bronze coinage of this period. The radiate crown is rendered with pronounced spikes, and the paludamentum is visible over the cuirass. The encircling Greek legend reads Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ ΑΥΓ, identifying the emperor by his full titulature as Marcus Antonius Gordianus Augustus. The flan is irregularly shaped, characteristic of hand-struck provincial issues from Bithynia.

附加信息

Nicaea was one of the most prolific civic mints in Bithynia under the Severans and their successors, producing bronze coinage well into the reign of Gordian III before the provincial bronze series was effectively killed off by Gallienus-era monetary reforms. The city had long competed with Nicomedia for regional prestige, and the volume of its civic bronze output reflects that rivalry in institutional form.

The reference VII.2#1912 places this within Waddington, Babelon, and Reinach's Recueil général des monnaies grecques d'Asie Mineure — still the standard citation for Bithynian provincials despite its age.
