Nacolea was a minor Phrygian city whose civic coinage under Gordian III belongs to a broader burst of provincial bronze production that accompanied his reign — the last period in which the Roman imperial system reliably supported autonomous civic minting across Asia Minor before the pressures of the third-century crisis began shutting down local workshops. The ethnic legend ΝΑΚΟΛΕΩΝ ΠΑΡΘΗΝΙΟϹ references the city's claimed association with the Parthenoi, a foundation myth tying Nacolea to a group of legendary settlers.
