Magnesia on the Maeander, the city almost certainly responsible for this issue, held the cult of Artemis Leucophryene as its defining civic institution — the temple precinct drove much of the city's political energy in its dealings with other Greek states. Bronze civic coinage under Gordian III proliferated across the Greek East as local mints seized on a reign long enough to sustain production but administratively loose enough to permit considerable local initiative in type selection. The Argo reverse ties the city to its mythological claim that the Argonauts stopped at the Maeander.
