Reverse description Heracles, nude and muscular, shown in right-facing composition wrestling the Nemean lion in the first of his canonical labours; the hero grapples the beast with both arms in a powerful clinch, the lion's body pressed against him. The reverse type reflects the civic pride of Saitta in its mythological imagery, a subject common to Lydian provincial bronzes of the Severan and Gordian periods. The ethnic legend of the Saittians is disposed around the figural group in the field.
