Obverse description Laureate bust of Gordian III facing left, the emperor depicted in military attire holding a spear resting on the right shoulder and a shield against the left shoulder; the shield itself bears an incuse scene of the emperor riding in a biga, spearing a fallen enemy while being crowned by Nike. The surrounding legend is rendered in Greek characters and reads ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ ΑΥΤ Κ Μ, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The portrait reflects the provincial die-cutting tradition characteristic of the Lydian conventus under Gordian III.
