Obverse description Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, depicted from behind in the characteristic three-quarter rear view. The imperial effigy displays the laurel wreath, paludamentum, and cuirass typical of Roman provincial portraiture of the mid-third century AD. The surrounding Greek legend reads ΑΥΤΟΚ Κ Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ ϹΕΒ, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The coin exhibits the irregular, somewhat crude style associated with the provincial mint at Edessa. The surface shows a dark brown patina with heavy encrustation consistent with prolonged burial.
