Cyzicus held the title of neokoros — temple warden to the imperial cult — multiple times over, and the proud assertion of that status in the coin's legend was as much civic politics as religious devotion. During Gallienus's sole reign, after his father Valerian was captured by Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa in 260, the eastern mints operated under considerable pressure to maintain legitimacy for a suddenly solo emperor. Local bronzes like this one filled a genuine transactional gap as the silver antoninianus deteriorated catastrophically in fineness throughout the 260s.
